Elements and Principles of Design

Pattern/repetition, Bench, NSU Campus Unity/Variety, Horse Statue, Hill City, SD Value, iPad Case Texture, Rocks in Backyard Playground Space, Sunrise, Roy Lake, SD In order to complete this assignment, I chose pictures that helped define each of the elements and principles of design. I used some pictures I took in the past, as well as pictures of objects around campus or at home. My partner and I made a PowerPoint containing all of our pictures and a definition for each element and principle.  For an extension activity, instead of the students taking pictures of the elements and principles of design, they could bring in objects from home or find items within the classroom that fit the definition of each category. A student could use a ruler as an example of line, because a ruler contains several straight lines.

Footprint

Creating a footprint with symbols is a great way for students to introduce themselves to the class. To begin, have the students trace their foot on construction paper and cut it out. Next, have the students find or draw images and words that describe themselves. For this project, we were asked to include three different mediums. For example, I used construction paper, magazine clippings, printer paper, stickers, and colored pencils. Use of different mediums allows students to explore art and be creative. An extension activity could include show-and-tell for younger kids. They would enjoy presenting pictures to the class, but it would be even more fun if they could bring in an actual object. It would be another way for students and teachers to remember one another. Older students could also write a story about themselves to go along with the footprint and share them with the class.
